Making money in podcasting (Audio & Video)

Quick, go turn on your television and radio! Go grab a magazine and open the news paper. What you will see and hear will be "old media" running their machine.

It is time for the real truth in why eMedia will not make money. Yes, there will be the select few that do, but for the most part the masses of producers will not make money. And yet, big media will continue to grow viewers on the internet for their inventory. Why?

When you turned on your TV or radio and opened the news paper and magazine, you saw ads for the shows on the stations. Millions of dollars are spent monthly on ads to promote the media we consume.

Currently we are all in silos with little exposure to the outside world. We have had a few break out stars, but it has not been anything to write home about. The fact is, we are always talking about the same things. The more viewers that come, the more ads that will be placed in your media. But that is unlikely unless you plan on buying a lot of Diet Coke or get 2 girls to crap in a cup and then drink it. EEWWWWW! You depend on being viral but it will only last for your 2-5 minute video and then you will lose your viewers because the people that are watching videos now are on the cutting edge. Our attention spans are short and we jump to the next thing after seeing if there is anything that makes us laugh.

How can we grab more eyes and then keep them watching? Instead of Podshow, Vimeo, Blip, and other sites of the same ilk, they need to take some of the funding that they get and try to grab new eyes. They need to start advertising in old media to get new people to the table. Instead of competing for the same 500,000 people that are already watching and listing in the space try and get 1 million more. Try running cheap ads on late night cable or in a local newspaper. See what happens. You got new desks and computers in your offices right? What will get you more money in the end? A desk or an ad. I would be curious to see the listenership history of Kevin Smith's Smodcast before and after his appearances on XM's Opie and Anthony. Or, how about after an article mentions Ask A Ninja or Epic-Fu in the paper. Hmm, I bet they jump up a lot. What is it going to take to do a micro study in one market?

Let's not add more companies to the TechCrunch Deadpool. Instead of always needing to think outside the box, we need to think inside the box on this one. Take your pride and try to sse not everyone can make NEW paths.

Get to Work!

And we will try this again......

For too long I have worried about what people think about the thoughts I have. That my opinion will somehow be less important than that of the people I read daily has kept me from posting my thoughts on a daily basis. That and my lack of focus due to sitting at my computer playing games, watching internet TV, and just being plain lazy. Now my grammar may at some times be wrong, my passion will always be real. I am not here to impress, but to only get my thoughts out there.

I was once told that passion could take you a long way, but never allowed that passion to be displayed other than with people I know or people that I have never known that have pissed me off. I was a medic in the Army but didn't follow up after because I don't like whiners. 7 years were spent at Best Buy as a Sales Manager and Project Manager. I am now at Lowes selling appliances because it makes me money. It is not my passion. What I will be talking about here will be my passion.

I will give advice to companies on what they need to do to get into the new age of technologies. I may even give suggestions to Lowes and get myself in trouble at my paying job. Apple will get a new stream of income from me. Entrepreneurs every where will be scrambling to get into my head for my next great idea. Although it may not be my first post here, this will be the day that I begin throwing the sugar cookies in the trash. I will call BullShit when I see it as I hope people do with me. I can't promise that I won't piss you off at some point, but the one thing I realized recently is that I will live this one life so I shouldn't keep quite because I am afraid of what YOU think of me. I am here to help bring my ideas forward to make the space better.

Let's have fun.
